On 19th September, Epik High finally released their 7th studio album 99, making their long-awaited comeback under YG Entertainment. Along with 99, they revealed the music videos for their title tracks "UP" and "DON'T HATE ME". But why did they decide to go for a double title track promotion?
YG Entertainment's CEO Yang Hyun Suk recently revealed the answer to that question and exposed that he had an argument with the trio over its title songs. He stated, "The reason why Epik High's 7th studio album has two title songs is because Epik High wanted to make 'Don't Hate Me' their title song and I wanted to make 'UP' featuring 2NE1's Park Bom as their title song. It's true we had a sort of a conflict while we were working on the album. But YG puts the artists' opinions above anything else, so I decided to go with double title songs which would be a win-win for both of us."
The reason why Epik High insisted on taking "Don't Hate Me" as their title song is because it's very meaningful to them. It tells their very own story and depicts their hardships. Beside that, they wanted to thank their fans for supporting them through all the hardships with this song.
On the contrary, Yang Hyun Suk wanted Epik High to look ahead and overcome past hardships. That's why he chose "UP" as their title song. In addition, he predicted "UP" to have a lively performance, as it has a strong hip hop sound.
